Hello, my name is Ella and I am very proud of this work. We did this work in term one. This piece of writing was from the unit of inquiry Exploration leads to discoveries, opportunities and new understandings. As part of this unit we learnt about diary writing and timelines. Here is one of my diary entries. I have worked extremely hard on this as well. Read on, & enjoy!

6 October 1769 Voyage one
Today I sighted the coast of New Zealand. I have been sailing for months and years on end. I have never had this feeling before. A shimmer of excitement and glory went through my body as I had finally found a country. I now knew I had to do the task of mapping the country accurately. I looked over onto the shore line. I saw bodies like mine moving around. The wind picked up and I could hear it going through the rigging. I loved the sound. The sea started chopping over and the boat was getting bouncy. After a while of being here the smell of the salty sea spray went through all our clothes and through our hair. I was amazed by the scenery - all the slopes and rises of the sea. I went down below and I heard lapping of the water on the side of the boat. The boat below was very small with many people on board.

Now that we have landed in Poverty Bay and the storm has gone by, I have started mapping the North Island and South Island. Earlier on today I went ashore to find the mysterious people that I now know claim to be Maori. I ended up fighting them. I still felt unsure and weird about these people but after a lot of blood and tears, we finally made an agreement that they would let me do my jobs on the island. I went back to the boat and we set off to catch fish and food to eat.
9 October 1769
Today was a great day. With the sea spray slicing over the bow and into the cockpit, I had set off earlier this morning to go around all the inlets and bays around the North Island. I was amazed by all the different shapes and colours on shore. I had looked over on the water and saw dolphins jumping out and back into the glimmering shining water. I had come into the bay that had a beautiful beach and it was high up in the country of the north island. I had anchored up for the night in this bay. My crew and I were on the beach winding down after a great day out on the water.

Yesterday and today have been great. Sorry I didn’t write yesterday, I was so caught up going through the gap in between the two islands. I had sailed down the west coast and gone through the strait. It was absolutely amazing. I never took my eyes off the sea. It was such a clear day no wind. You could see the other side.
I kept sailing through the night and ended up in this beautiful place with golden sandy beaches and inlets and bays for miles. It was called the Abel Tasman. I still had to do some more mapping and finish it off .
11 April 1770
By now I was down the very south of the south island and my time was coming to an end. I had finished mapping New Zealand. I really enjoyed finding this new island and it is a beautiful country. I love it! I am making a promise in my diary that I will have to come back.
I now have to sail North West to go to the coast of Australia and map that.
But that is another story…….
