Jess's Book Review

The Spook’s Battle is a story about a young boy named Tom who goes to a spook to train as an apprentice. As part of the job he gains many enemies, most of them witches. Soon Tom's worst fears come to life and the devil himself is after him! Tom has to find a way to survive on his own and unlock the mysteries about his mother. Perhaps one of her many secrets could save him? The Spook’s battle is one of the most amazing stories I have ever read. It has just the right amount of suspense and drama, although, sometimes the plot line gets confusing and unclear, but overall I really enjoyed the book and I can’t wait for more!

Book review

Percy Jackson
And the sea of monsters
Rick Riordan
This book is great a book ,I really enjoyed reading this book , it has lots of mysteries and action .I would recommend this book to anyone wanting action in a book that is an easy read . This book is about a boy called Percy Jackson , he is a half god , half human (how you become a half god is when a god has a baby with a human so he looks like a human but has water powers because his dad is the water god) he is on a mission to saving the camp for half bloods , but the tree that protects the camp from the monsters is dying and they have to find the cure to the tree .   I can’t imagine a person like Percy Jackson in the real world because he is a half blood god.

Rick Riordan was inspired to write Percy Jackson because his son Percy is Dyslexic and has ADHD he hated reading but he loved greek myths so Rick turned his boy into a later day hero by his book series and now they are making a movie about the Percy Jackson series . The characters are :Percy Jackson,  Annabeth, big-guy setting takes place at a camp for half blood kids god’s and it protects them from the monsters in the outer world with a wall .

Bella M | The Hobbit Book Review

The hobbit is a very creative and magical book with lots of exciting scenes. The Hobbit carries you away to a whole new world filled with amazing adventures and majestic creatures. This book has just enough ( if not more ) detail to paint a vivid and realistic picture in your mind. As Bilbo and friends trail on a journey to “The Mountains” they run into all sorts of entertaining obstacles! Will they make it to Smaug's cave to find the treasure?

“A flawless masterpiece” ~ The Times

The way the author uses his words in a first person and intriguing script fits the book perfectly and makes the book more interesting in my opinion. The Hobbits general idea is very creative and gives me the idea it took the author a lot of commitment to create this masterpiece. I love how there's even a whole new language and way of living which is definitely a big hook. It feels like the author is writing a nonfiction piece because of the beautiful description and detail. The characters personalities are just as interesting as the story line - and it blends perfectly into an original apologue. The moral behind the story is a good example of “Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence”.

Bilbo is a very realistic and entertaining hobbit - who of course is nothing like the others! The organised but flustered personality adds a hint of clumsiness! The Hobbit fortunately isn't a one of a kind - there's a whole series! The brilliant Lord of The Rings. It also has a series of movies based on the books - but I would recommend reading the books first for the full experience!! The Hobbit is a must have classic book which I would definitely rate 5 stars!

‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman

Once is the first book in a series set in the 1940’s during World War 2 in Poland.  A Jewish boy called Felix is fighting for his country for freedom.

Felix had lived some of his life in an orphanage, his parents had given him up to keep him safe from the war. One day he decided to run away and find his mum and dad. He ran into deserted town and down into the streets. Then walked along to his mum and dad's bookshop. He looked inside then he was attacked. He lay on the ground, then a man found him and took him away.
He woke up to find himself laid on a bed with a man and a girl looking over him. He was in a safe place for kids. The man was called Barney and the little girl was called Zelda. A few months later Nazis came through the house attacked the people and them on a Nazi train, but Felix and Zelda escape up on to the hill. They manage to get up into the forest before any Nazis see them. They hide behind a bush.

I liked this book because it was about Poland during World War 2 when Jewish people were being persecuted for their faith. It explained how in that time what Polish Jewish people had to go through, and how they survived. I also like this book because he makes it so that you feel like you're there. The way he describes…. He makes it so that you feel like you're there and is tells you what each characters like and dislikes are. I like Morris Gleitzman's writing because it's very real and descriptive about what he's trying to explain.

‘Once’ was a book by Morris Gleitzman, an English born Australian author of young Children's and young adults fiction. He was born in England in 1953 and moved to Australia in 1969. So he could escape from school and become a famous writer.

Morris Gleitzman has gained recognition for sparking an interest in AIDS in his controversial novel ‘2 weeks with the Queen’. He wrote his first novel in 1985 and is one of the Australia's most successful authors. He has also wrote other books in this series such as, Then, Now, After, Soon left in the series.

Ruby Redfort:

By Lauren Child
-Kiera Hall

The Ruby Redfort series is written by Lauren Child. Ruby Redfort is a series of six and ‘Take Your Last Breath’ is the second book.

Ruby is a 13 year old girl and is an ace code cracker.Ruby works for Spectrum a secret spy agency. Strange things have been going on in Twinford, like someone is following her. Birds and sea life are flocking inland, reports of hearing strange sounds, pirates are attacking the boats at sea and some very odd shipping is going on. Ruby Redfort is determined to figure out what is going on.

I really enjoyed this book because there were heaps of mysteries inside one mystery and you never knew the answers till the very end. You were always kept on edge not really knowing what was going to happen until you turned the page. Every time I picked up this book I couldn't put it down. It had lots of suspense throughout the book.

I didn’t dislike anything in this book. ‘Take Your Last Breath’ is a great mystery book, because you never knew what would happen next, such as when Ruby had no choice but to dive without air or else she would be stuck in the ocean.

The Ruby Redfort series was inspired by  Clarice Bean series,Clarice Bean started as a picture book and then became novels. The Ruby Redfort series was also written to show girls that it is good to be clever, brave and love maths and adventures. Ruby Redfort ‘Take Your Last Breath’ will keep you hooked to the very end.

“Ruby Redfort - Feel the Fear”
By Lauren Child

Ruby Redfort is a 13 year old kid, ace code cracker, secret undercover agent for Spectrum and a genius! ‘Feel the Fear’ is the fourth book out of six in the Ruby Redfort series written by ace book writer Lauren Child. The order of this series is, ‘Look into my Eyes’, ‘Take Your last Breath’, ‘Catch your death’, ‘Feel the Fear’, ‘Pick your Poison’ and the new book is ‘Hang in There Bozo’.

Feel the Fear is a mystery book as you never will know what comes next, this is one of the three reasons why I love this series. The second reason like it is because it has lots of ups and down’s eg. she goes from doing parkour to fighting an evil villain. Third reason is because Lauren Child writes it so when you start to read, the setting and adventure pops out of your page and sets a vivid picture in your as soon as you read the first sentence. I really love this book!

In this book Ruby must prove to Spectrum that she can be a field agent and not just work with Froghorn (A.K.A the silent G as Ruby calls him) in his office.

Something or someone has been stealing things from high rooms in Twinford City. People have claimed to see something sky high and are feeling ghost movements in an old building at the ‘Scarlet Panna Cotta’. Once I finished the book it felt like I was with her on her mission! Ruby is determined to complete this mission even if she is is accompanied by her best friend Clancy Crew and her butler/Spectrum secret agent, Hitch. Ruby Redfort is mischievous, exciting and really fun to read about. Ruby must bust this mystery and not let her curiosity get the best of her…

Lauren Child first introduced the character, Ruby Redfort, in her three great award winning books (Utterly Me, Clarice Bean, Clarice Bean Spells Trouble and Clarice Bean Don’t Look Now). From there she started writing her ‘Ruby Redfort’ books. Lauren gets her inspiration from people's conversations and/or seeing something funny happen.

Book: Juggling with Mandarins
Author: V. M . Jones

Pip is 13 and has a mother, a father, an older brother and a younger sister named Madeline. Pip doesn’t like his dad yelling at him from the sideline when he's playing soccer. Pip’s father wants him to be someone that’s he’s not. His father wants him to be this amazing soccer player, just like his brother Nick, but he just isn’t. He likes juggling and climbing. Pip has a love-hate relationship with his dad, and has a hard time remembering that his dad is only human.
I think this is a really good book. The author goes into heaps of detail.
His english teacher challenged the class to juggle 3 balls. Pip not only thinks that he can juggle 3 balls, he is determined to juggle 5 balls. There is only one problem, he doesn’t have any, so he uses mandarins.

About the author.

BOOK REVIEW
JUGGLING WITH MANDARINS
           By V.W. Jones

THIS BOOK IS KIND OF A MYSTERY BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT AND YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT PROBLEMS THERE ARE TILL YOU GET DEEPER INTO THE STORY.

There is a lot of action in this book. theY’re doing something different each chapter. i think the author did quite a good job when they described the race to the top of the climbing wall. i felt like i was watching the whole race.

i think the author was writing about someone in real life, someone that has had this journey before.

I think the language he used was descriptive because although it was quite simple, it had a really good flow.

“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time”
Mark Haddon

15 year old Christopher Boone is an amazing mathematician who hates the colour yellow, has a pet rat called Toby and has Asperger syndrome. One night he finds his neighbor's dog (wellington) lying dead with a pitchfork through him on their neighbor's front lawn. Christopher then follows in the footsteps of his favourite novel detective Sherlock Holmes, he decides to write a book on this mystery and as he does other secrets around him start to unfold. Follow Christopher on his journey, learn how he thinks and find out who killed wellington.

I think this intricate novel is an amazing read for age 12 and over. The story line is filled with plot twists which keeps you entertained throughout the story. It is a very moving book and relatable to people, as the main character has asperger syndrome he explains how he thinks through the story and makes you feel attached to this book. The story takes place on his own street. (randolph street/he lives at number 36.) I love how the author has written this book in detail and in a way we can understand most things, it is a little confusing at times because there are very complicated math problems throughout the book. Also the chapters are done as prime numbers because…
“I think prime numbers are like life they are very logical you could never work out the rules even if you spent all your time thinking about it.”
-Christopher Boone

Read this book and find out if Christopher Boone finds the murderer of wellington, if he will pass his A level in maths. This fantastic novel will keep you on edge every step of the way.

Other books you might like to read like this one is wonder by R.J. Palacio followed by Auggie and me, but there reading ranges are a little younger.

Someday Angeline
By Louis Sachar
“‘Octopus,’said Angeline Persopolis. She was only a baby. It was the first word she’d ever said which was why it was preposterous”

Screenshot 2016-05-18 at 12.22.25.pngSomeday Angeline is a good book by Louis Sachar, about a little girl who knows heaps and heaps about the ocean even though she’s never been there. Her name is Angeline and she is extremely smart and is in the highest grade where everyone is mean to her, including the teacher who is called Mrs Hardlick.  She makes friends with a boy her age called Gary Boone who is a funny character and makes heaps of jokes and names himself Goon, a mixture of his two names. Goon’s teacher is called Miss Turbone, but he calls her Mr Bone. Angeline's dad, Abel,  is a garbage collector and she wants to be just like him. She gets nominated to be a school garbage collector but when she tells her dad, he makes her quit. But Mrs Hardlick doesn’t listen to her and makes her pick up all the rubbish anyway. She gets angry and messes up everything in the room and then she runs off to the aquarium. When she gets there she realises that she knows every name of every animal at the aquarium without looking at the name plates. One day she catches the bus to the sea by herself because her dad doesn’t want to take her. She goes to the end of the pier and jumps off.

“Abel’s face was now streaked with tears. ‘Hospital,’ he whispered.”

I think that Someday Angeline is an intriguing book and it is a really good read. I would rate this book ★★★★☆.

The Spooks
Secret
By Joseph Delaney

The plot in this book is when Morgan one of the Spook's apprentice tried to raise Golgoth the Winter God  from the grimoire a book with rituals for the dark . The characters include the Spook , Tom Ward , Tom Wards mum , Morgan , Alice , Meg and Meg's sister a feral lamia witch. It's set in the Spooks winter house , It's got feral witches in the cellar and a bogart stirring things up on the moors close by.

I’d classify this book as a fantasy mystery kind of book . The author did a good job with this book it made me want to keep reading, it had me hooked!!

I like the way The author … uses descriptive words, like on page 74  says “...the cloud had cleared and a full moon was shining, casting its silvery light down onto the clough to be reflected back by the stream”. He also keeps you hooked with exciting battles and cliff hanging chapters like in the first chapter Tom ward finds out about morgan but it tells us nothing about him .

This book is a very good book I'd say, I

Loved every page of it The author's inspiration was from another book series called the Last Apprentice and that he moved into a town that had a boggart in it, so he thought to write about an expert who deals with these creatures -The Spook .

Book: Juggling with Mandarins
Author: V.M Jones
Genre: Adventure

Pip,Pip Head,Pippin,Phil is an ordinary 13 year old boy who doesn’t really do that much but is forced to play football by his Dad. Pip hates it when his Dad comes to watch football because he is always screaming at the ref and telling everybody else that it was offside! Contact! And most of all not right.

Pip has got two great friends, Mike his best mate at school and Katie. Pip has always been friends her since they were young. Katie is more of a boy than a girl but there are always sides of her that defiantly show she is a girl.

Mrs. Holland is Pip’s teacher. One day Mrs. Holland announces there is a juggling competition so Pip gives juggling a go and finds out he has quite a big talent at juggling just like rock climbing. Pip has to keep rock climbing and juggling a secret because he uses mandarins to juggle and makes them all squishy. He can’t tell his family about rock climbing because his Dad would go ballistic because he is so driven to make Pip do football.

The author makes you feel as if you are there because the author is so descriptive.
The author does make you think the characters are real because the author explains the characters emotions so well.
I really like the way the author uses their words because it makes everything seem real.
I don’t have the book but my favourite part of the book was when Pip was in a rock climbing final and he wanted his dad to watch. Also when he was running after the milk truck and he rolled his ankles it made me think that my ankles hurt as much as Pip’s. I really liked the book because there are lots of different little adventures that Pip has to do without his parents knowing and because the author describes everything so well.

Juggling with mandarins
By V.M Jones

This is a must read for older kids. I would recommend this book to someone who has patience, because it builds up until it gets interesting and then goes downhill from there as it is really predictable and  not very surprising.

The genre ‘Juggling with Mandarins’ fits into junior fiction. This book is based in the Igloo and in Pips house.  The Igloo is where Pip goes climbing and his home is where he spends the rest of his day

The author V.M Jones writing feels like feel like you are sometimes in the book and sometimes you are just feels like it's the end of the world.

There are a few main characters. Pip is the main character
Katie is Pip's friend but P ip likes katie then there is not so nice dad who thinks that Pip is good at sport
There is Nick who Dad likes the most because he's good at sport.

My opinion was that when she  writes her next book, she should make it more fast paced and more descriptive so that it would feel more exciting. I hope that her new book ‘Shooting the Moon’ will be much more fast paced.

The Hunger Games Review

The Hunger Games is a very good book written by Suzanne Collins. It is set in what was once North America, but is now Panem. The Capitol is the heart of Panem, surrounded by 12 Districts. Katniss Everdeen, 16, volunteers to fight to the death in the Hunger Games after her 12 year old sister Prim was chosen to compete. The Hunger Games is an annual event that involves a boy and a girl from each district that have to fight to the death. The winner will be crowned the victor and receive a life of luxury. Fuelled by her hatred towards the Capitol and her love for her sister, Katniss promises Prim she will win.
On her journey she encounters Haymitch, her constantly drunk mentor, Effie, her gracious but oblivious escort, Cinna, her kind and caring stylist, and Peeta, the boy with the bread.
In the arena she makes do with a bright orange backpack and a few small gifts from sponsors, but it isn’t until she gets her hands on a bow that things really get going for her. But will she keep Prim's promise and win everything, or will she fail and lose it all?
I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked Suzanne’s writing style because it made you feel like you were right next to Katniss the whole time. It was like you could see everything she saw and feel everything she felt. I would rate this book 5 stars.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid
Hard luck:Jeff Kinney

For me personally I would say this is a must read because it is suitable for young children and older children also it is a very fascinating and perfectly paced book. For me what is very intriguing and eye catching are the illustrations they are really captivating and are also very neat.

The type of genre this book fits into is a fiction comedy novel. Well the scene takes place in Greg’s house where he was at that stage where everything was a bit out of place for him. Also he had just found out that Rowley has a girlfriend and has totally ditched Greg… The author Jeff KInney makes you/me feel like you're in the book because it's so interesting and you feel like you're in that situation. I actually like the author's writing style because it is very relaxed and amazing to read and is so funny he is one of my favourite authors.

My opinion as I have said previously in my book review it is a must read and makes you think that you are the wimpy kid/Greg it has 217 pages full of great illustrations and sentences that makes you laugh I really recommend it and I do hope you do get to read Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck

“Land Of Stories - The Enchantress Returns”

By Chris Colfer.

A year later: Alex and Conner spent the past year living life as normal as any thirteen year olds could. When one day their whole world turned upside down. Their grandmother was quick to do anything to protect the twins from the most powerful enchantress in the land.

Alex and Conner must find a way into the Land of stories to help save a place they would call home and friends they would call family and defeat the enchantress once and for all.

( My Review )

The Land of Stories is an action packed series which twists the classic fairytales like Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood in the first four books of the series.  The characters are portrayed as young adults.  The main characters are twin 13 year olds Alex and Connor who set out to protect and save their family and friends.  The fifth book is being released in July 2016. I highly enjoyed reading this series because it leaves you on the edge of your seat especially in the second book, sending the twins on a giant chase throughout the land collecting items to create one giant magical item but still managing to make the reader want more of the book.

I think this book fits into the right into the ‘fantastical’ adventure genre! The main characters, the twins feel very real as they are kids our age living an ordinary life until their mother is kidnapped.

I really like Chris Colfer's writing style, especially his book plots of good versus evil. Chris Colfer has written other books some written around, The Land of Stories.  Chris Colfer is also an actor most known from the American Comedy series named, Glee.

By far … is my favourite series / books and I can't recommend it enough. I would think it suits readers 10+ because there are four books all varying between four-hundred to five-hundred pages each, with some difficult vocabulary. But definitely my favourite series / books by far!

The land of stories has four books in the series at the moment. But a fifth book coming out soon.
The first called, “The Wishing Spell”
then the second, “The Enchantress Returns”
the third, “Brothers Grimm”
the fourth “Beyond the Kingdom's”
and fifth book is “The Author's Odyssey”

I haven't read the fifth book, as it is not out yet, but I am really exciting to see what Chris has in store for us this time!!!

Kaspar's Book Reveiw

Conspiracy 365

A book series that I have been enjoying recently is Conspiracy 365.  There are 12 books in the original set with a further five books published later.  The chronological nature of these books means that they need to be read in the correct order for the reader to fully understand the story.  The books are told in a timed stamped format by the main character, Cal Ormond, and each book takes place over a full calendar month.

“January,” the first of the series begins with Cal being chased down the street by a menacing figure who warns him, “They killed your father.  They’re killing me.”  The prologue sets a frightening  descriptive tone that gets the book off to a heart racing start and it doesn't slow down at any point afterwards.  The author, Gabrielle Lord, has used an interesting technique to keep up the pace of the story and keep the reader wanting to know more.  The book is page numbered in descending order meaning that the reader can feel when the end is near!  In addition the author has used occasional pictures to illustrate things which would be harder to describe in words.  This also seems to make the story feel more believable, as many are hand drawn illustrations on small pieces of ripped or folded notepaper.

As the mystery unfolds, Cal is forced to make some tough decisions about who he should trust - his best friend, Boges, his Uncle Rafe, his mother or sister?  His determination to find out why his father was killed in Ireland only leads him to more questions than he has answers and to people who want to stop him from finding the truth.

This is a nerve racking, thrilling adventure series that pulls the reader in closer with every word.

“Don’t blink don’t forget to breathe.”

This is my current favourite book and I would highly recommend it to all keen readers 10 and over.  It has all the good features a book should have - good descriptions that paint a picture in your mind and a strong plot that encourages the reader to keep reading.  I don’t think there are too many downsides to the 365 series, but if I had to name one it would that the pace of the book goes quite fast and that I would have liked to see further into some of the other characters’ stories.  Overall I think that this is a strong, heart racing story that is a must read.

Book:STAR WARS, THE RETURN OF THE JEDI
Author: Tom Angleberger

Image result for star wars the book cover tom angleberger

Star Wars is a great book I loved it.
It is a action book with a lot of guns and light
Sabers.   There are lots of characters i will name some of them
Jabba the hutt, Wicket, Rebo, Crumb, Yoda, Ghost Yoda, Lando, Luke,, Leia, Chewie, Han, R2D2, C-3PO, Boba Fett, Clone Troopers and
Darth Vader.  The action takes place in the whole book really all throughout the text.

I disliked at the start where at the Jabba's palace is too long and takes long to get into the plot of the story.   Tom Angleberger has written like the book is   real life it makes me feel part of it this book. This is set in desert, forest, and building type thing in the death star.

The books have people die like Darth Vader and Bobafett they have vehicles like Millenium Falcon,Imperial Shuttle,X Wings,Tie Fighters,Speeder Bikes,At-at,Ewok gliders,

Monsters of the story: Jabba The Hutt,Rebo,Crumb,Sarlacc

What I liked about the characters: they're all got their own sense of humor as well as Han Solo he has the most dramatic sense of humor with that shooting pose

Tom angleberger got inspired by famous writers in America and he is an American story writer that has written a lot of books

STORMBREAKER

ANTHONY HOROWITZ

The book I read was terrific.
I think that I would read it
heaps more and read the rest of
the series.

This book is an action packed adventure which is the first book out of the Alex Rider Series out of eight Books. The reader is left wanting to read the next story Point Blank in the series to see what Alex gets up to again to save the good guys from the baddies.

The story is set in modern day England in London city. When the doorbell rings at three in the morning it is never good news. Alex is woken by the first chime of the doorbell. He looked out of his window and saw the police by his front door. The police tell him his uncle has been killed in a car accident because he did not have his seatbelt on.  Alex knows his uncle always wore his seatbelt so is suspicious from the start.

Alex was devastated, as he loved his Uncle very much.  He is determined to find out what really happened. Halfway through the book he discovers his beloved Uncle was actually a spy.

Anthony Horowitz does a really good job at making the reader feel part of Alex’s life and feel his hurt for his uncle when he is trying to find out the answer to his death...

I can relate to Alex because he is adventurous and I am too. Alex was in tall grass and he could not see anything. There were two quad bike with bad people on them and they were looking for him. Alex was in trouble. He manages to knock one guy off and jumps on his motorbike and rides off and he makes the other moterbiker drive off a cliff.

I love how Anthony Horowitz made the book come to life with how he writes it and how he made it not just for kids but for adults too.
